The universe sends us hardships to see how we will reäct to them and whether we will reäct at all. This is not “unfairness”, but a test — a chance to prove ourselves.

Humanity and me

Work

I work no matter what, because that’s what we, men, are supposed to do. In fact, we need to work more — so future generations aren’t faced with work that is even more threatening. Work should ideally be a favorite pastime; working time directives and many child labor restrictions should be axed.

Work ethic is essential; there is no excuse for bad work.

A lot of good work sadly goes unsung: few think about the unseen effort that it takes to keep society running smoothly. To all the invisible workers: thank you for your service.

Freedom spurs good work and creativity. Minimum wage legislation should be cancelled: it steals opportunities from beginners.

I seek work for what I will learn more than for what I will earn. I work selectively, in a flow state.

All of this said, the time people have to spend working should tend to zero: there should be no need for human work at all. Saying “TGIF” is a symptom of wage slavery.

Luck

Luck does not exist. Quoting Ron Swanson, luck is a concept invented by the weak to explain their failures.

There is, however, a cause for every effect, and an effect for every cause.

What is referred to as beginner’s luck is an invitation to continue the journey. I won my first-ever game of Go despite playing against a world champion doing his best.

The lottery is a tax on people who are bad at maths, and even more so on a supposedly lucky day: it is probabilistically unlikely to have multiple yuge unrelated events happen in a day. Althô I do suppose that one’s spiritual energy field reaching a certain frequency can make it more probable. Trust your gut.

2018

Robert:

2018 was a good year. Less dramatic and eventful than 2017, but more fundamental for my future. I became a designer, mostly thanks to Bureau Gorbunov Designer School. I earned my first proper money and got my first proper job. I started sharing my thoughts more openly and learned a new language. I learned how to code, interact with people, and read 481 books. I became Booksearcher’s secret advisor and finally spent a summer in Italy. Oh, and albeit I started playing guitar in 2016, this year was the first one when I started doing so seriously.

Most things that happened in 2018 — like the Hawaii false missile threat — make me think “this was 2018?!”: that’s how long this year was.

I see what I want 2019 to be like, and I’m ready to make it happen. Happy New Year!
